No One is an Island

I recently heard two radio shows about the recent research on the microbe biome existing in and on people. It is a mapping study somewhat similar in scope to the study that mapped the human genome. The researchers apparently not only mapped individuals but also mapped similarities between families and groups. They discovered that someone’s biome can change if that person spends some time in a different part of the world.

The interesting part is that scientists estimate that we all have ten times the number of microbes in and on us that we have cells in our body. Okay, this is where it becomes really interesting. The estimates of the number of cells that we have range from fifty million to 100 million cells. I cannot even come up with what the number of ten times that would be.

So, none of us is alone. Ever. We are connected to living things—directly at all times. To paraphrase John Donne, No one is an island.

One of the problems with modern life is, especially in America, that the cleaner and more sterile we become, the more we adversely affect the beneficial microbes. We certainly affect our immune systems and the functioning of our various bodily systems. As I understand what I heard on these programs, we also can decrease the ability of the various organs to communicate with one another. But, I could be wrong about this part.

Yet, we do want to keep from letting the non-beneficial microbes from making us sick. One thing I took away from these programs is that being a good host to the favorable microbes can help keep the detrimental ones from affecting us adversely.

This just gives us another reason to think carefully about what we eat and the products we use. If we treat our beneficial microbes well, it can help not only us but the earth.
